NYC half-marathon

My friend Y.w is training for next year's NYC marathon. This past Sunday she ran the NYC half-marathon; it was her first half-marathon and the longest distance she has yet raced.

The day was hot and humid; in the afternoon the temperatures broke 90. The race organizers had emailed contestants to warn them of the heat. They suggested reconsidering time goals carefully in light of the conditions, but as I watched I was amazed that people were running as fast and as well as they were.

I left the house late, and walked along the west side highway. The field was sparse but consistent; people ran past at regular intervals. Spectators dotted the running path. Some shook cowbells, others cheered and clapped. Some merely stood and watched.

As I came closer to the finish, the crowds thickened. I found a spot a few meters from the end and stood close to the barrier. I watched the clock, guessing at when my friend would pass. I almost missed her. She was running close to her time, looking to finish strong. I ended up verifying her by her number.

Afterwards I ran to hug her. She protested, but I was having none of it. She smiled broadly and held her medal aloft, her first. I stepped back and took this with my Holga. I don't often post portraits (I rarely take them), but I couldn't help but post this. 13.1 miles. As Bon Jovi would have it, "Whoa! Halfway there, whooooaaah! livin' on a prayer!" I'm so proud of her!

ragi: it was a really hot day, though i didn't realize until later that a lot of the water dripping off of people's bodies was from an outdoor shower placed at the end of the race.

great pic!!

Great portrait! Something I need to do more of myself. Sorry if it is stated somewhere but how do you develop your stuff? Do you develop yourself or take to some lab? If so, which one?

Thanks Christian. I actually tend to shoot few portraits. And I have a lab do my developing (mainly because I'm too lazy to do it myself, though I'm starting to think of developing the rolls I shoot in New York myself (it's daunting when I come back from a trip with >50 rolls to develop myself). I use a lab on Lafayette Street called the Color House.
