Students, NYC

I often walk home at night if I'm below 23rd street and the weather is fine. One night, while walking home I peeked into a street level window and shot this photo; the rest of the details escape me.

I was always curious what it would have been like to have gone to school in New York City (let alone grow up here). What images I had were from films. Those that come immediately to mind are Francis Ford Coppola's fairy tale portion of New York Stories and Larry Clark's Kids. While I was between high school and college, I seem to remember going to a house party thrown by some New York kids. I was nervous. I arrived early for some reason and they were still setting up. The one thing I remember was that they spread baby powder on the dance floor to make it more slippery. Other than that I seem to remember nothing.

The other night Jean told me she had been here for 13 years, which means I've been here at least that long. New York has changed in that time, both within me and without me. This past evening, another friend, a die-hard New Yorker, talked to me about potentially leaving. As for me, these days I feel uncertain about my relationship to the city. At the very least, I long for better weather.
