Lion dance, Chinatown NYC

I forget when exactly I was in Chinatown when I took this; I'm not even sure about the occasion. I do remember that there was no major holiday being celebrated. It may have been a restaurant or store celebrating their own anniversary or opening.

Almost every year, I miss the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations. A few times I have been later in the day, after the bulk of the festivities are over. Many years it seems to rain. A friend has told me stories of celebrations in the past, before the ban on fireworks. It sounds amazing. I feel like I could have seen them if I had gone right when I had moved to the city, but I was incredibly unaware of the city then. I seem to remember walking the streets alone back then, head back, gaping at the skyscrapers.

My favorite aspect of this photo is the woman's hand holding up her camera, the lion contained in her picture preview. That it's right over the lion's eye is a bonus.
